Rent split by room calculator

Bigger room, bigger share.

Split the rent in two parts: the shared space, divided evenly, and the private rooms, divided by size. Type the rooms and the calculator gives each person a share. Nothing you type leaves this page.

Shared space means the kitchen, living room and anything everyone uses, split evenly. The rest of the rent is divided by each room's floor area. A private bathroom counts the room as 15% larger.

Why two parts

Most of a home is shared: the kitchen, the living room, the hallway, the bathroom everyone uses. Splitting all of the rent by bedroom size overcharges the person with the big room for space they don't use alone. Splitting all of it evenly ignores that one room is a walk-in closet with a window. Dividing the rent into a shared part and a private part settles both complaints, and the percentage between them is the house's to decide.

Room size is one way to set a ratio. Income is another, and the income split calculator does that one. Some houses combine the two. Whatever you choose, agree it once and let the app apply it. How to split bills with roommates and keep it friendly goes through the trade-offs.
